The #10/#12 ranked Louisville teams took on Notre Dame on Thursday, and the Cardinals swept the Fighting Irish with the Louisville women dominating the meet.

Women’s Recap

The Louisville women won all but one event at the meet, including diving. A few of the women also swam “off” events, or events outside their typical wheelhouse.

Anastasia Gorbenko, the fastest breaststroker in the NCAA this season, did not swim any breaststroke events for the Cardinals, but she still won both of her events. She raced the 200 free and the 400 IM, setting massive times in both. In the 200 free, she swam a personal best 1:42.95, which is the 4th fastest time in the country this season. She also set a personal best 400 IM time of 4:06.34, the 4th fastest 400 IM time in the country this season, though most teams have not raced the event.

With Gorbenko out of the 100 breaststroke, sprint freestyler Caroline Larsen filled her role, winning the 100 breast in a personal best 59.20. She also won the 100 fly in 51.92, just off her lifetime best of 51.38.

Gorbenko and Larsen also swam different positions on the 200 medley relay, with Gorbenko swimming backstroke and Larsen swimming breaststroke. Unfortunately, the splits are not available for their legs as there appears to have been a touchpad malfunction on both 50s.

They were joined on the medley relay by Julia Ogren on butterfly and Julie Mishler on freestyle to stop the clock in 1:35.39.

Larsen also raced on the 400 freestyle relay, leading the team off in 47.68. Angelina Solari swam 2nd (48.80). Daria Golovaty was 3rd (48.91), and Mary Clarke anchored (47.69) to bring the team home in 3:13.08. They finished about four seconds ahead of Notre Dame’s 3:17.18 in 2nd.

The only other double event winner for the Cardinals was distance freestyler Thilda Haell. Haell won both the 500 free and the 1000 free. In the 500 free, she swam 4:43.36 and in the 1000, she swam 9:33.67.

Lainey Mullins was the only non-Louisville event winner on the women’s side, setting the top time in the 200 fly of 1:58.49, about two seconds off the 1:56.04 she swam at the ACC Championships.

Men’s Recap

The Louisville men also won most of the events, though they dropped two swimming events and both diving events to the Notre Dame men’s team.

Nikita Sheremet, who has been on fire this season, won both sprint freestyle events for the Cardinals. In the 50 free, he swam 19.25 and in the 100 free, he set a season best 42.67 to come in just two tenths ahead of Notre Dame’s Shane Eckler.

Shortly after that performance, Sheremet led off Louisville’s 400 freestyle relay in another season best time of 42.39. He was followed by Rian Graham (42.78), Aiden Musso (42.96), and Aidan Kaplan (44.10) who swam 2:52.23 for the win.

Sheremet also swam on the medley relay, anchoring in 18.70 to help Louisville earn the win. Filip Kosinski split 21.50 on the backstroke. Finnley Conklin was 23.86 on the breaststroke, and Aiden Musso had a monster 19.82 split on the butterfly. They stopped the clock in 1:23.88 to finish about a second ahead of Notre Dame’s 1:24.99

There were a few Louisville swimmers who won multiple events. Oscar Isberg  won the 200 free (1:35.45) and the 500 free (4:23.22), and Gregg Enoch won the 200 fly (1:43.28) and the 400 IM (3:49.57).

Notre Dame picked up two individual swimming event wins. In the 1000 free, James Darcy swam 8:59.82 to earn the win by about four seconds over Max Hatcher‘s 9:03.40 in 2nd place.

Marcus Reyes-Gentry won the 100 back in 45.51, a new season best for him and four tenths faster than Filip Kosinski‘s 45.92 for Louisville.

The Fighting Irish also swept the diving events with Daniel Knapp winning the 1-meter in 368.48 and the 3-meter in 396.75.
