In recent years, many legendary wrestlers have seen their careers wrap up, including John Cena, AJ Styles and Hiroshi Tanahashi.
2027 is also set to be the final year in the career of Adam Copeland, with the Rated R Superstar recently announcing that he will retire in 2027.
One name still wrestling at a high level almost weekly is WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio, who just this week was part of an incredible three-way with Dragon Lee and Chad Gable for the Intercontinental Championship on Raw.
Rey Mysterio to retire in 2027?
However, it seems as though Rey’s career could also be coming to an end next year.
Per PWInsider, there has been chatter within WWE about Rey Mysterio potentially retiring in 2027, with WWE having discussed ideas on how to present his retirement.
Rey’s retirement year would follow the previous retirement tour of John Cena, as well as the retirement of AJ Styles at this year’s Royal Rumble event, both at the hands of Gunther.
Rey Mysterio’s retirement should lead to catalyst for Dominik Mysterio’s babyface turn
When the question was asked about who could be the person to retire Rey Mysterio, the most obvious answer would be his son Dominik Mysterio.
While Dominik would be a great choice to retire Rey, he is far from the only option in the company, with the obvious choice of Gunther likely being the one that Paul Levesque will ultimately go with.
However, Rey’s retirement, even if not directly caused by his son Dominik, could serve as a great way to finally elevate Dominik in the eyes of the fans.
After spending many years as a hated heel on WWE television, fans have begun to grow warmer to Dominik, with him even getting positive reactions from the crowd.
Fans have long been waiting for the Judgment Day to break up, or at least Dominik break away on his own away from Liv Morgan, JD McDonagh and the rest of the group, and his father’s retirement would be the perfect way to do it.
Whether Dominik is opposite Rey on the night, or he comes to his father’s aid after the match to share an emotional embrace, the final moments of Rey Mysterio’s career should be he and his son making amends, setting Dominik up for superstardom.
