Jessica Pegula has landed herself in hot water.
The American superstar was caught vocalising some choice words about rival Mirra Andreeva and the Russian’s coach, Conchita Martinez.
During the exchange with coach Mark Knowles, Pegula described Andreeva as a ‘diva’ and stated that she had lost some ‘respect’ for Martinez.
“Conchita’s always been very nice to me, but I’ve lost a little respect for her because I’m like, this girl – I think she’s a nice girl – she’s just a diva,” Pegula said. “She needs to be humbled. She needs to be [inaudible] putting her in her place; [inaudible] stand up to her.”
The comments were picked up by courtside microphones during Pegula’s live practice session in Indian Wells on Wednesday.
Understandably, Pegula has received some backlash after making these comments.
However, in truth, these comments never should have been broadcast in the first place.
Jessica Pegula should receive little criticism following her jab at Mirra Andreeva and Conchita Martinez
This was an embarrassing moment for Pegula, one that she will no doubt feel incredibly sheepish about.
How do you rate Jessica Pegula’s chances of ever winning a Grand Slam?
Moreover, some of Pegula’s remarks most certainly went overboard.
However, to lambast Pegula for her criticisms would be wholly unfair in the context of the scenario in which the comments were made.
This was clearly a private conversation that should never have been privy to the public eye – to have such a conversation aired publicly is wholly unfair on the individual who believed they were speaking in a safe environment to a member of their team.
Pegula made a mistake that she will most likely apologise for, but this was a private conversation in a private setting that should have never seen the light of day.
In fact, as per The Athletic, the WTA Tour have already admitted that they failed to properly inform WTA Finals participants and their teams that practice courts would be ‘mic’d up.’
Pegula has also reportedly reached out directly to those involved to apologise.
Jessica Pegula’s 2026 Grand Slam results
- Australian Open: Semi-finals [lost to Elena Rybakina]
- Roland Garros: First round [lost to Kimberly Birrell]
- Wimbledon: Quarter-finals [lost to Coco Gauff]
- US Open: Semi-finals [lost to Aryna Sabalenka]
Some on social media would have you believe that they are completely infallible and have never made an error in their own lives – overly criticising and mocking Pegula for her mistake.
Pegula, like everyone does during their respective lives, has made an error in judgement. It is about time that we forgive players for mistakes, rather than conveniently jumping on the bandwagon of condemnation.
Jessica Pegula and Mark Knowles’ full conversation
“She treats Conchita so bad,” Knowles said of Andreeva.
“Conchita’s always been very nice to me, but I’ve lost a little respect for her because I’m like, this girl – I think she’s a nice girl – she’s just a diva. She needs to be humbled. She needs to be [inaudible] putting her in her place; [inaudible] stand up to her,” Pegula replied.
“Conchita pokes her and eggs on her behaviour.”
“She needs somebody to put her in her place,” Knowles continued. “Once she gets that, I think she’ll be really good. I mean, she’s already really good. Look how she moves.”
Who will win more Grand Slams before retiring – Coco Gauff or Mirra Andreeva? 🏆
Explain your reasoning in the comments 👇
Pegula said: “She moves like a cat. She’s wonderful. She’s got the perfect serve. She’s smart. She anticipates well.”
“It’s so funny how you see her and then you see Coco’s mentality. If she had Coco’s mentality, she’d be better than her.”
“Oh, definitely,” Knowles remarked.
Pegula concluded the discussion by saying: “The serve, everything, all-around, and she moves just as good. But like mentally, she’s…”
