The internal reaction to Sami Zayn’s performances as Undisputed WWE Champion has been revealed, courtesy of a new backstage report.

After his first run with the Undisputed WWE Championship was cut short after just nine days back in July, fans had doubts whether Zayn would be given another shot at holding the company’s most coveted prize.

But now, despite plenty of stiff competition on SmackDown, Zayn is closing in on two months as champion in his second reign and will go one-on-one with World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns in the main event of Crown Jewel 2026.

In order to get to that spot, Zayn had to first defend his Undisputed WWE Championship against Trick Williams on the October 30 episode of SmackDown – a superstar that got the better of Zayn on two occasions earlier this year, including at WrestleMania 42.

Ahead of his win over the United States Champion, Zayn cut an impassioned promo backstage about the “immeasurable disrespect” shown towards him from the likes of Roman Reigns, Nick Aldis and Williams, despite his proven abilities in the ring and career accomplishments:

“I have endured immeasurable disrespect, from all the way to the top to all the way at the bottom. The first week I won this championship Nick Aldis, our GM said ‘Well let’s see if you can make it past nine days this time.’ Roman Reigns said he doesn’t think I’m going to make it to Crown Jewel with this championship. Now we’ve got Danhausen of all people giving his opinion.

“No one seems to think I’m going to hold it that long. What to you think is going to happen? Do you think after everything I have endured to win this that I am going to go out there and lose this to Trick Williams?

“…I said it on Monday and I’m going to say it again, I am the most versatile WWE superstar of all time. I am the most adaptable professional wrestler of all time. I am one of the all time greats.

“There will never be another like me, never. And I’m not going to wait until I’m retired, I’m not going to wait 20 years till after I’m done to get the recognition I deserve, I am taking it and it starts tonight.”

Backstage reaction to Sami Zayn’s recent work as Undisputed WWE Champion

While Zayn’s comments were very much in character, they may have some layer of truth to them as well as the Undisputed WWE Champion reportedly has won over “doubters” backstage in WWE who questioned his worthiness of another run as champion.

WRKD Wrestling took to Twitter to share Zayn’s backstage promo on SmackDown, and added the following insight into the perception of Zayn’s recent performances:

To put it simply: Sami Zayn has won over doubters backstage with his performance over the past few weeks that originally felt he wasn’t worthy of a second world title run.

It’s not hard to see why WWE officials would be impressed, Zayn is consistently delivering some of the best mic and character work of his career in this current heel role.

Unlike Roman Reigns, who seems like a lock to hold his World Heavyweight Championship until WrestleMania 43, Zayn will have his work cut out for him to do the same considering that the likes of Penta, CM Punk, Kevin Owens, Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton (to name a few) are circling his title.

However, if Zayn continues to impress in his role as this reports suggests he has, perhaps him holding the championship into next year is not as unlikely as it once seemed.
