Daniil Medvedev’s progress at the Vienna Open was halted on Saturday by seven-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz.

Alcaraz defeated Medvedev 6-4, 7-6 in the Vienna Open semi-finals, securing his place in the final against Alex de Minaur.

Alcaraz subsequently triumphed against the Australian in Sunday’s championship contest, winning 6-1, 6-3 in the Austrian capital.

As for Medvedev, the Russian can be proud of his performances over the last few weeks; he has become the fourth man to qualify for the ATP Finals after winning the Almaty Open and reaching the last four in Vienna.

The 30-year-old has also amassed a rather confusing statistical record against some of the best players on the planet.

Daniil Medvedev’s strange trend on the ATP Tour

It seems Daniil Medvedev plays at his absolute best when competing against those ranked number one on the ATP Tour.

Which ATP player do you think will win the 2026 Paris Masters title?

The Russian superstar, a champion at the 2021 US Open, is now 0-19 against Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic when they are ranked within the top 10 on the Tour – but not world number one.

When those players are ranked as the world number one, Medvedev holds a very impressive record of 8-8 on the professional circuit.

Whether the Russian can snap his 0-19 record remains to be seen.

The Russian could face Alcaraz and Djokovic at the ATP Finals later this month. Alcaraz has already qualified for the event, while Djokovic remains in the hunt for the final few qualification spots.

Daniil Medvedev’s next event

Medvedev could also face Alcaraz and Djokovic in the Paris Masters, which is set to take place from November 2 to 8.

Alexander Zverev, Flavio Cobolli, Alex de Minaur and Ben Shelton are all also expected to compete in the final Masters 1000 event of 2026.

Neither Jannik Sinner nor Felix Auger-Aliassime, the two players who contested last year’s final, will compete in the 2026 event. Both players are nursing injury issues.

Medvedev is a former champion in Paris. In 2020, the Russian defeated Alexander Zverev to win the third of his six Masters titles.
