Sofia Kenin will now tumble down the rankings after her latest defeat.

Kenin is a Grand Slam champion, having won the Australian Open in 2020 after beating the likes of Coco Gauff, Ash Barty and Garbine Muguruza to claim the title.

Prior to the Australian Open that year, Kenin had not even reached the quarter-finals of a major tournament before, but she would then go on to reach another Grand Slam final later that year at Roland Garros.

Kenin has been ranked as high as world number four, but she is now far from that ranking after a string of poor results.

Who is the most shocking Grand Slam champion ever?

You never know what might happen…

Sofia Kenin is now ranked outside the top 180 as poor form continues

Kenin began the 2026 season ranked as the world number 28, having reached the final of the Charleston Open and the semi-finals of the Tokyo Open last year.

The American has been unable to even reach a quarter-final this year, with Kenin winning just eight of her 33 matches this year. Kenin has played 23 tournaments this year, but she has failed to win back-to-back matches at any of them.

This includes Kenin’s most recent tournament at the Japan Open in Osaka, where she lost in the first round of the main draw after receiving a lifeline as a lucky loser.

Kenin had already dropped all the way down to world number 126 prior to the Japan Open, and after losing six of her last seven matches she has dropped even further.

The Tokyo Open took place during this week of the 2025 season, and therefore Kenin is now set to drop 183 points and is forecast to fall down to world number 187 in the live rankings. Kenin’s ranking means that she is unable to gain direct entry into the Tokyo Open this year and is therefore unable to defend the points she earned from last year’s tournament.

Sofia Kenin’s record at the Australian Open since winning the title

Kenin has consistently struggled for results at all tournaments this year, but she has never had a run at the Australian Open since she won the title in 2020.

The 27-year-old has appeared at every Australian Open since then, but Kenin has only won one of her matches at the tournament, having lost her last six matches at the tournament.

This includes earlier this year, where Kenin was beaten in the first round by her compatriot Peyton Stearns.

Kenin’s ranking drop means that she will not even be able to get direct entry into the Australian Open next year and could even be forced to play qualifying if she does not receive a wildcard.

The last time Kenin played in Grand Slam qualifying was at Wimbledon in 2023, when she made it all the way to the third round of the main draw after stunning Gauff in the first round.
